About Me

I studied Stonemasonry and Architectural Carving at Weymouth College in 1999.
Whilst at college I developed a particular interest in lettercutting, I then went onto study lettering at the Cardozo Kindersley Workshop in Cambridge under Lida. Whilst there I completed a number of major projects including a piece in Westminster Abbey.

Following that training I worked for two historic building conservation/restoration companies, Nimbus Conservation Ltd and Strachey and Strachey Conservation, both based in Somerset. I gained experience with the use of limes, repair techniques and ethics of stone conservation working on listed churches, abbey’s, manor houses and monuments.

I took numerous residential short courses with The Weald and Downland Museum and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings in the history and use of limes, historic building conservation practice and stone conservation all over England.

I left Strachey and Strachey Conservation to become self employed with a workshop in Yarley, Somerset. Whilst self employed I won a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship to study gilding at West Dean College, which encompassed both oil and water gilding.

I later moved to Normandy, France and set up Artisan Stone Work doing traditional building repair and restoration, working in Normandie, the Vendèe and the Limousin regions. Our work was the sympathic care and repair of old buildings and included rebuilding in stone broad-walled construction with lime mortars, repairs to rammed earth walling and lime harling, plastering, rendering and pointing. We then lectured on the S.P.A.B. course “Restoring a House in France” as the specialist contractors.

I am now registered as The Stone Workshop, doing lettercutting and carving to commission from my workshop in Le Chefresne in La Manche.
