Every aspect of my work is done by hand, I design, draw, cut, paint, gild and fix by hand.

Lettering is about an intimate understanding of letter forms, spacing between letters, inter linear spacing and inter word spacing, it is the balance of all of these things that makes a good piece of work.

Bad spacing ruins a good design.

Every job is different and every need specific, so the result will be original every time.

The process starts with the idea, the lettering or text you want on a stone and what kind of stone, shape and size. I then make sketches and from that I make a full size drawing, enabling the client to see the piece in its full proportion. It is then that I can give a price and time frame, I take into account how long a piece of work will take me to do but also if I am to order stone, how long it will take to cut at the quarry.

When the stone is ready I begin the process of preparing the stone, depending on the job that can mean shaping, moulding or rubbing up the surfaces. Then it is ready to go on the easel where I mark out the layout and begin drawing the letters.

This process is slow because it must be right, I must look again and again at the balance and never miss an opportunity to improve it. Once I am happy the process of cutting can begin, cutting is a quiet business requiring concentration, all the attention must be on the tip of the chisel. However, you are always welcome to come and see this process.

Sometimes the contrast between the stone’s surface and the newly cut letterforms or carving can be rather weak. It is traditional to paint or gild the letters to help the inscription show up for the first few years.

Le lettrage c’est avant tout la compréhension des lettres, leur forme, l’espace qui sépare chacune d’elles, mais aussi les lignes et les mots. C’est l’équilibre entre tous ces éléments qui font qu’une pièce est réussie. Un mauvais espacement peut gâcher un joli dessin.

Chacune de mes œuvres est différente, avec des besoins spécifiques, ce qui rend le résultat toujours unique.

Tous commence avec l’idée : l’inscription ou le texte que vous voulez voir gravé, le type de pierre désiré, sa forme et sa taille.

Je commence alors les esquisses qui, une fois rendues en taille réelle, permettent au client d’imaginer les proportions finales de la pièce. Des lors, je peux donner une idée du prix et du temps nécessaire (je prends en considération le temps passé sur la pièce ainsi que les délais de livraison et d’extraction de la pierre depuis la carrière).

Quand la pierre est prête, j’entame la phase de préparation. Celle-ci peut varier en fonction du travail nécessaire : façonnage, moulure, polissage des surfaces.

Puis j’installe la pièce sur le chevalet pour définir la disposition et réaliser le traçage des lettres.

Cette étape est longue car elle doit être parfaitement exécutée ; je dois sans cesse vérifier l’équilibre et ne jamais manquer une occasion de le rectifier.

Des que je suis satisfaite, la découpe peut commencer. Cette étape requiert du calme et de la concentration. L’attention doit être portée tout entière sur la pointe du burin.
